A license is a lost dog's ticket home. And it's the law! A person is more likely to help a dog that is wearing a collar and a tag. A dog license attached to the collar will get the dog home even faster.

Purchasing a Dog License

All jurisdictions within Kootenai County, with the exception of the City of Rathdrum, require dogs 6-mos and older to have and wear a dog license. Failure to license or renew your dog’s license could result in a citation, fines, and/or penalties. You will need to purchase a license based on where you live. Information about each jurisdiction is provided below.


When you are purchasing a license, make sure to bring:

  • your dog’s current Rabies certificate signed by your vet and


  • proof of spay/neuter (if you want the discounted rate)



We will not issue a dog license without a current Rabies certificate.

  • City of Coeur d'Alene

    City of CDA dog licenses can be purchased at:

    • Kootenai Humane Society Adoption Center and Thrift Store
    • Alpine Animal Hospital
    • Lake City Pet Hospital
    • Prairie Animal Hospital (service fee charged by PAH)
    • Sunset Animal Hospital

    Altered - $10 per year (spay/neuter proof must be provided)

    Unaltered - $20 per year

    Tag replacement - $5

  • City of Hauser

    City of Hauser dog licenses can be purchased at:

    Altered - $5 per year (spay/neuter proof must be provided)

    Unaltered - $15 per year

  • City of Hayden

    City of Hayden dog licenses can be purchased at:

    • Kootenai Humane Society Adoption Center
    • Prairie Animal Hospital (service fee charged by PAH)

    Altered - $7.50 per year (spay/neuter proof must be provided)

    Unaltered - $15 per year

    Tag replacement - $2

  • City of Post Falls

    City of Post Falls dog licenses can be purchased at:

    • Kootenai Humane Society Adoption Center
    • Post Falls Police Dept.
    • Kootenai Animal Hospital
    • River City Animal Hospital

    Altered - $1.25 per month (spay/neuter proof must be provided)

    Unaltered - $2.25 per month

    Tag replacement - $2

  • City of Rathdrum

    Dog/s residing within the city limits of Rathdrum are not required to be licensed. However, they are required to wear an identification tag and a current rabies tag. They must also be current on vaccinations.

  • Kootenai County (Dalton Gardens and Hayden)

    Kootenai County dog licenses can be purchased at: 

    • Kootenai Humane Society Adoption Center
    • Kootenai County Sheriff Dept.
    • Northwoods Veterinary Hospital
    • Rathdrum Animal Hospital
    • Veterinary Services

    (Residents of Dalton Gardens purchase a Kootenai County license.)
